Tom of Finland’s happy, playful, hyper-masculine drawings provided the template for
a proudly gay esthetic in the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s. Called Tom’s Men, the characters he created in his pen and ink illustrations and comics inspired fans to challenge outdated stereotypes and be
fully confident, men-loving men. While a Tom’s Man is defined as supremely comfortable in his sexual orientation, his essence is physical: a vigorous, perfectly formed young male.
