Marilyn wearing the iconic “Gold Goddess” gown from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953). Designed by William Travilla in deep-gold lamé, the dress was sunburst pleated from a single width of fabric and cut dangerously low in front.
Seen very briefly from the back in the final cut of the film, studio executives decided that its plunging-to-the-waist halter neckline was too daring for the big screen. However, Travilla stitched up the neckline five or six inches so Marilyn could wear it to the 1953 Photoplay gala, to accept the award for “Fastest Rising Star of 1952.” It still managed to generate scandal when Joan Crawford expressed her disapproval publicly: “It was like a burlesque show.”
In 2009, as part of its Barbie 50th Anniversary Pink Label Collection, Mattel replicated the dress (and earrings) for a “Barbie as Marilyn Monroe,” called Blonde Ambition.
