Marilyn showcases her flawless smile in this iconic portrait taken for the Film Noir classic Niagara (1953). To convey the character of Rose Loomis—a heartless vixen scheming to murder her husband—Marilyn wore a dangerously low-cut black dress with a white collar, designed by William Travilla. (MM wore the gown again when she was invited to be grand marshal of the Miss America Pageant parade in September 1952, and on the cover of the debut issue of Playboy in December 1953.)

A variation from this session, with Marilyn’s expression sensual but slightly sinister, was the one chosen by artist Andy Warhol in 1962 to memorialize her in a series of silkscreen canvases—one of which sold for $195 million in 2022, a record for a 20th-century work of art at auction.
